Availability For the bigger problems
A permanent data replication process during continuous operation already offers a decent level of availability. However, you have to distinguish between a replication of the actual data and replicated journal information and metadata about object and state consistency. For the level of availability, it is also critical if you run replication in a synchronous or asynchronous mode.
True high availability is defined by causing no or only minimal loss of data and no or only very short time of operational disruption. Next to permanent replication of a consistent operational state and other technical measures, this includes organizational aspects as well.
For a well prepared high availability environment, it is critical that you either fully automate the switch-over process, or at least determine and document all necessary procedures for the switch-over process in advance. The involved personnel needs comprehensive training and you have to simulate switch-over processes in recurring emergency drills.
For a disaster recovery, however, you not only require a most current data copy, but also the necessary IT capacity for a restore and an operational launch. Appropriate resources must therefore be planned in advance, and these should be available independently of the productive environment.
